R.I.P. Alexander McQueen
The British fashion industry lost one of its brightest stars yesterday with the apparent suicide of Alexander McQueen, who was found hanged at his Central London home.
The designer, 40, had been grieving over the death of his mother, Joyce, who died on February 2. He had been due to attend her funeral today.
The loss of one of the most commercially successful and respected British designers has cast a pall over next week’s London Fashion Week. Friends said that he had been under pressure to complete his autumn/winter women’s wear collection for next month’s launch in Paris. One of his lines, McQ, was due to be shown at New York Fashion Week yesterday but was cancelled. The designer was also known to be upset that a recent relationship had ended.
McQueen recently described the suicide of his mentor — the style icon Isabella Blow — as “the most important thing he had learnt in fashion”. During a newspaper interview conducted by his mother, McQueen was asked what was his most terrifying fear. He replied: “Dying before you.”
He announced the death of his mother on Twitter. He wrote: “I’m letting my followers know that my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not had me nor would you RIP mumxx.” He later added: “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
By Sunday he had apparently rallied and wrote: “Been a ****ing awful week but my friends have been great but now I have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!.”
Two days later his final post said: “I’m here with my girl annie tinkerbell wishing kerry the ****, happy birthday in NY, your 40 now girl time to slow it down we think.”
Annie Tinkerbell is believed to be a reference to Annabelle Neilson. The model and socialite has been described as McQueen’s muse and the pair are reported to have spent New Year skiing in the Alps.
Despite the advice to his friend, McQueen had shown no evidence of slowing down himself after his 40th birthday party last March, which attracted the stars of fashion including fellow his designer Stella McCartney and the supermodel Kate Moss.
The day before his mother’s death he had written: “From heaven to hell and back again, life is a funny thing. Beauty can come from the most strangest of places even the most disgusting places.”
Colleagues and friends had become concerned at his erratic behaviour. But it was still a shock when his body was discovered soon after 10am at the £640,000 ground-floor flat in Mayfair.
A man who claimed to be his boyfriend went inside the flat yesterday afternoon and left looking distraught before the body was brought out at 4.30pm. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today.
McQueen had told a friend that he was excited at the prospect of moving into a new home — believed to be in the same block where he was found.
Alice Smith, a fashion consultant, who had known McQueen since his first collection, said: “I saw him a few months ago and he seemed a bit . . . but I thought he was fine. I knew his mum as well. They had a very close relationship. He used to like to go back to his mum’s and have tea and biscuits on the sofa.”
McQueen, who had an estimated £20 million fortune in 2006, was renowned in the fashion industry for his fragile temperament, often exploding with rage. But Ms Smith said that he was misunderstood: “He was actually quite fragile. He was very sweet but had a wicked sense of humour so people thought he was aggressive.”
Shoppers passing McQueen’s shop in Old Bond Street, Mayfair, laid flowers and a candle outside. The store closed soon after the news of his apparent suicide. A spokeswoman said that it was likely to remain closed in the coming days, as would McQueen’s other stores around the world.
In a statement, the company said: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home.
“At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.”
Staff leaving the headquarters of his company in Clerkenwell, Central London, were too upset to discuss his death. There were similar scenes at the McQueen’s family home in Hornchurch, East London, where the designer was due meet his brothers and sisters before attending his mother’s funeral today.
Born Lee Alexander McQueen, the son of a taxi driver was the youngest of six children. He left school at 16 and went to work at Anderson & Sheppard in Savile Row after watching a television programme about the apprentice shortage in traditional tailoring. He moved to Gieves & Hawkes before working in Japan and Italy.
McQueen returned to London in 1994, hoping to work as a pattern cutter tutor at Central St Martins but was persuaded to enrol in the MA course in fashion design.
He came to the attention of the wider fashion world after being discovered by Blow, then the fashion director of Tatler, who bought all the clothes from his graduate show. The style guru killed herself in May 2007, taking an overdose of weed killer after she was given a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
Blow recalled how his mother had been instrumental in her own relationship with the designer. “I tried to get hold of him and I kept calling his mother, but he was on holiday,” she said. “She kept saying: ‘He’s not here, he’s not here’. She told him: ‘This crazy person is trying to get hold of you’.”
Mrs McQueen was a social science teacher who became a genealogist. She remained a key figure throughout her son’s career — lending him money to buy materials for early collections, stringing together beads and dyeing materials.
After graduating McQueen set up his own label based in the East End of London. He went on to be named head designer at Givenchy in 1996, succeeding John Galliano, before joining forces with Gucci, which bought 51 per cent of his company.
Mrs McQueen was often seen at his shows. He revealed that she “frequently tells me to keep my mouth shut”.
The designer once described himself as the “pink sheep” of his family and said that he did not come out as gay until his early 20s. He had a civil partnership with the film-maker George Forsyth in 2000. However, last autumn he said that he had ended the relationship two years earlier and had started another with a porn star known as Mr Stag.

A new Hip-Hop themed series is coming to E! Entertainment titled Candy Girls, which will focus on women in rap music videos.
The 30-minute show, which is labeled a "docu-soap," centers around aspiring and established female actresses who work for an agency, which casts the potential models in the videos.
E! ordered eight episodes of Candy Girls, which will air Sunday nights at 10:30 PM, immediately following the premiere of the third season of "Keeping up with the Kardashians."

Grammy day was supposed to be a glittery affair for R&B's reigning It couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna. But things went horribly amiss.
About the time Brown was scheduled to be singing "Forever" onstage at Los Angeles' Staples Center, he was instead detained by police, being questioned for allegedly roughing up Rihanna.
Brown, 19, turned himself in at the Wilshire station around 6:30 p.m. and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. The case will now be sent to the district attorney's office and further charges could be filed. He was released from jail after posting $50,000 bail.
Sources tell E! News that the alleged victim was Rihanna, 20, and that she suffered visible bruises on her face during an altercation that took place hours earlier. Both in turn balked on scheduled Grammy performances.
A spokeswoman for Brown's label declined comment. Rihanna's publicist, Amanda Silverman, would only tell E! News that the 20-year-old "Disturbia" singer was involved in an unspecified traffic mishap. "Rihanna is well," the rep said. "Thank you for concern and support."
Per department policy, police declined to identify the alleged victim in the incident, which occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the Hancock Park area, apparently as the two were heading home from Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy bash, where they had been all smiles.
In a statement, police say Brown and his companion "became involved in an argument. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."
By the time officers arrived on the scene, Brown had split.

"The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.
Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.
The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, joined by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.
In addition to Collins, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, remained uncommitted.
Democrat Edward M. Kennedy, who is battling a brain tumor, arrived in Washington in case his vote turned out to be needed. The Massachusetts senator has been in Florida in recent days and has not been in the Capitol since suffering a seizure on Inauguration Day more than two weeks ago.
Democrats hold a 58-41 majority in the Senate, including two independents, but it takes 60 votes to pass the stimulus bill because it would raise the federal deficit.
At $780 billion, the legislation would be smaller than the measure that cleared the House on a party-line vote last week. It also would mean a sharp cut from the version that has been the subject of Senate debate for a week. That measure stood at $937 billion.
Beyond the numbers, though, any agreement would mark a victory for the new president and would keep Democratic leaders on track to fulfill their promise of delivering him a bill to sign by the end of next week.
Obama said further delay would be "inexcusable and irresponsible" given Friday's worst monthly unemployment report in a generation — 598,000 jobs lost in January and the national unemployment rate rising to 7.6 percent. And late Friday, federal regulators announced the closures of two banks, First Bank Financial Services in Georgia and Alliance Bank in California, the seventh and eight failures this year of federally insured banks.
"The world is waiting to see what we're going to do in the next 24 hours," said Reid who has spent much of the week trying to balance demands among moderates in both parties against pressure for a larger bill from liberals in his own rank and file.
By midday, the majority leader had spoken once with Obama by phone and five times with Emanuel. He met with Collins and Specter as well as Sen. Ben Nelson, a conservative Nebraska Democrat who had long advocated cuts in the House-passed bill.
"We're clearly not there yet," Collins said at one point. She spoke with Obama at the White House earlier in the week, though, and told reporters as she shuttled between meetings in the Capitol, "I'm still hopeful that we can achieve a compromise because the stakes are high and the goal is important."
One Republican-proposed document that circulated earlier called for cuts of $60 billion from money Democrats want to send to the states. That money is targeted to avoid budget cuts for schools as well as law enforcement and other programs.
Talk of cuts in proposed education funds triggered a counterattack from advocates of school spending as well as unhappiness among Democrats.
One, Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, told reporters he and others hoped that some of the funds on the chopping block would be restored next week when negotiations open on a House-Senate compromise.
At its core, the legislation is designed to ease the worst economic recession in generations, and combines hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending with tax cuts. Much of the money would go for victims of the recession in the form of food stamps, unemployment compensation and health care. There are funds, as well, for construction of highways and bridges.
But the administration also decided to use the bill to make a down payment on key domestic initiatives, including creation of a new health technology industry and so-called green jobs designed to make the country less dependent on imported oil.
And Democrats in Congress decided to add additional huge sums for the states struggling with the recession, as well as billions more for favored programs such as parks, the repair of monuments in federal cemeteries, health and science research and more.
With Obama enjoying post-inauguration support in the polls and the economy shrinking, Democratic leaders in Congress have confidently predicted they would have a bill to the president's desk by mid-February.
But Republicans, freed of the need to defend former President George W. Bush's policies, have pivoted quickly to criticize the bill for its size and what they consider wasteful spending.
The entire Republican rank and file voted against the measure in the House, effectively prodding senators to take up the same cause.
In the intervening days, Republicans have appeared to catch the administration and its allies off-guard, holding up relatively small items for ridicule and routinely seizing on comments from Democrats critical of the House-passed bill.
At the same time, they have stressed a desire to help the economy but have said they prefer tax cuts and spending that would have a more immediate impact on job creation.
Privately, Democrats in Congress have been critical of Obama and his aides for failing to counter the Republicans more effectively. In recent days, the president has sharpened his rhetoric against unnamed critics of the bill whom he accused of trying to re-establish the "failed policies" of the past eight years.
As Reid struggled to nail down the necessary votes, the White House announced Obama would travel to Florida and Indiana next week to campaign for a stimulus measure. Both states have Republican senators. The president also is scheduled to hold a prime-time news conference on Monday where questions about the economy are likely to dominate.
Despite the struggle, some Republicans seemed to sense the White House would ultimately prevail, and sought political mileage.

The Illinois House voted overwhelmingly Friday to impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich, an unprecedented action that sets up a Senate trial on whether he should be thrown out for abuse of power, including allegations that he tried to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.
Impeachment required just 60 votes. The final result was 114-1.
Legislators accused the second-term Democratic governor of letting down the people of Illinois by letting ego and ambition drive his decisions.
"It's our duty to clean up the mess and stop the freak show that's become Illinois government," said Rep. Jack D. Franks, a Democrat.
Blagojevich was out jogging in his Chicago neighborhood when the vote came down. His office declined to comment, but said he would issue a statement Friday afternoon.
During the House's 90-minute debate on impeachment, no one spoke up to defend the governor. But Rep. Milton Patterson, a Chicago Democrat, made the sole vote against impeaching Blagojevich.
Patterson said he read the impeachment committee's report and wasn't comfortable voting against the governor. "I have no firsthand knowledge of any of the evidence," he said.
"I went by my own gut feeling, it's as simple as that," he said. "I read the report. If the government is going to indict him, let them go ahead and do that. That's their job and I'm doing my job."
Rep. Elga Jefferies, another Chicago Democrat, voted "present."
Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on federal charges that include allegations he schemed to profit from his power to name Obama's replacement in the Senate. The criminal complaint included an FBI agent's sworn affidavit describing wiretaps that caught Blagojevich allegedly talking about what he could get for the seat, how to pressure people into making campaign contributions and more.
That arrest triggered impeachment hearings by a special House committee.
The committee on Thursday unanimously recommended impeachment based on the criminal charges but other allegations as well — that Blagojevich expanded a health care program without proper authority, that he circumvented hiring laws to give jobs to political allies, that he spent millions of dollars on foreign flu vaccine that he knew wasn't needed and couldn't be brought into the country.
"The citizens of this state must have confidence that their governor will faithfully serve the people and put their interests before his own," the committee's report said. "It is with profound regret that the committee finds that our current governor has not done so."
Blagojevich has denied the criminal charges. He criticized the House impeachment process as biased and said a Senate trial would produce a different result.
But he didn't testify before the House impeachment committee and hasn't offered an explanation for the federal charges.
"His silence in this great matter is deafening," said House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, a Chicago Democrat.
